Four new homes that have been built as part of a housing development in south Powys have been purchased by the county council for social rent, it has been announced.

Powys County Council's New Development Team has purchased the two-bedroomed properties as part of efforts to increase the number of affordable and secure social homes that it can offer to the people of Powys.

The properties have been purchased as part of a 'Off the Shelf Scheme' from Morgan Homes, who are building 110 new homes at Parc Brynygroes in Ystradgynlais.

As part of the planning permission for the development, four of the housing units were allocated for affordable housing with the remaining units to be sold on the open market by the developer.

This 'Off the Shelf' Scheme will help the council deliver its 'At Home in Powys - Housing Business Plan', a five-year programme which would see the council provide more homes for social rent.

Matt Perry, Powys County Council's Chief Officer - Place, said: "The council has an ambitious plan to help tackle the housing emergency in the county and this 'Off the shelf' purchase will help us achieve this.

"We want to secure more social homes across the county, either through building new council homes ourselves, working with housing association partners or by working with housing developers and agreeing future package deals.

"This will then allow us to provide more social housing that meets the needs of our residents and ensures that we help to build a stronger, fairer, greener future for Powys."
