International Women's Day 2024

The theme for this year is #InspireInclusion, emphasising the importance of diversity and empowerment in all aspects of society, and Powys County Council is committed to celebrating diversity and promoting equality in everything we do, to improve the quality of life for everyone living, working and visiting the county.
The council's workforce is made up of just under 70 per cent females, and hosts a predominantly female Corporate Leadership Team, as well as a female Chief Executive, Chair of Council, and three female Cabinet Members.
Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: "Having women in politics is crucial to gain a voice at every level. There are gaps in female representation, but we do our best to fill them, and continue to encourage more women to come forward in the future."
Cllr Sian Cox, Cabinet Member for a Caring Powys, said: "I'd like to honour the immense service provided throughout Powys by our 13,465 (minimum) unpaid carers, nearly two thirds of whom are women. They live and work beside us, and their top request is for emotional support. One way to recognise International Women's Day is to learn who they are, and show them we care."
Cllr Sandra Davies, Cabinet Member for Future Generations, said: "Women have had to strive hard to be recognised as equals in society. It is wonderful that young girls can take part in most sports, other activities and in employment. We can turn on the television and watch women play and referee: football and rugby, truly inspirational! We still have a long way to go to help protect women from abuse (and men!). Equality is what we all strive for. We have achieved a great deal, we must not become complacent, this is essential for our future generations."
Cllr Beverley Baynham, Chair of Powys County Council, said: "I am incredibly proud of what women have achieved in Powys as a whole. Whether in government, sports, business or culture, there are many wonderful strong, confident local women, striving to make a significant difference to the lives of the people in our County and beyond every day."
The council is an inclusive workplace with policies, procedures and networks in place to support women and other employees at every stage of their lives.
