Powys County Council is offering the chance for people to start a new career and earn whilst they learn.

The Council offers apprenticeships in a range of public sector roles. To coincide with National Apprenticeship Week 2024 (5-11 February), the Council is celebrating that over 20 people have been given new starts in the past year with apprenticeships in services including social care, housing, highways, ICT and education.

One of those is Jade from Rhayader who has just completed the first six months as apprentice administrator within the social care training team.

Jade applied for the role after leaving school and whilst she was considering her future options. She said: "I wasn't sure if university was for me so I took some time out. When I saw this job advertised, I thought it sounded like something I would be interested in whilst giving me the chance to gain qualifications."

She added: "I've really enjoyed it so far to be fair. Work-based learning feels natural and I'm enjoying trying out an area I wouldn't have thought of before. I would definitely encourage others to consider doing an apprenticeship."

Cllr Jake Berriman, Powys County Council's Cabinet member with responsibility for HR and workforce, said: "We are delighted to have been able to offer opportunities to Jade and many others in a range of front line and support services.

"Apprenticeships can offer a fantastic career path for people of all ages. We have also committed to paying our apprentices the Real Living Wage too - an hourly rate based on the cost of living which is independently set."

He added: "If you are interested in a new opportunity, I would encourage you to apply for one of our future apprenticeships which will be advertised on our website: www.powys.gov.uk/jobs  In addition, you can sign up to our Talent Pool mailing list where you can be contacted directly if a suitable vacancy becomes available."
